Recently, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a warning regarding extreme exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation for several regions in Indonesia. Hot weather has indeed been affecting the Southeast Asian region, including Indonesia, in recent weeks. At its peak, the temperature in the Ciputat area, Jakarta, reached 37°C on April 17, 2023.
According to BMKG, the current hot weather is caused by several interrelated factors. Besides the trend of climate change and global warming that often causes heatwaves, high air temperatures can also be caused by the annual cycle of the sun's apparent movement. BMKG estimates that these high temperatures can recur annually during the same period.
Impacts of Hot Weather and UV Rays on HealthIn addition to the stuffy air, hot weather also has an impact on health. In its advisory, BMKG recommends that the public use sunscreen with SPF 30 to protect the skin from exposure. UV light exposure can indeed cause health problems if it lasts for a long time.
Some health problems caused by UV radiation include:
- Sunburn
Skin burning or sunburn can occur if the skin is continuously exposed to direct UV rays. This condition is characterized by the appearance of redness on the skin that feels painful to the touch.
- Skin cancer
UV radiation can be one of the causes of skin cancer. Cancer cells can appear in body areas frequently exposed to UV rays such as the face, hands, and neck, and can spread to other parts.
- Vision impairment
Besides the skin, the eyes are also vulnerable to the effects of excessive UV exposure. Eyes that experience damage or impairment due to UV exposure often experience blurred vision, decreased ability to see colors, and in extreme cases, blindness.

Impacts of Hot Weather and UV Rays on House WallsDid you know that the sun's UV rays can penetrate walls and enter the house? This can happen if the house walls are not maximally protected, leading to cracks on their surface. Hot air temperatures cause the exterior walls of the house to expand. If not maximally protected, hairline cracks will appear on the wall surface. These cracks allow UV rays to enter the house, making the house feel stuffy and hot.
Like human skin, exterior walls function to protect the interior of the house from extreme weather changes. However, extreme weather changes that cause cracks on the wall surface render the exterior walls unable to function and protect as they should.
