SIDOARJO, November 22, 2023 – On Thursday, October 26, 2023, PT Avia Avian Tbk. held the Launching Event for the Avian Brands Environmental Care CSR Program in Wadungasih Village, Sidoarjo Regency, East Java. The event was attended by various public officials and community leaders, including the Head of Sidoarjo Environmental and Sanitation Agency, the Buduran District Secretary, the Head of Wadungasih Village, RT/RW heads, and local residents.
This CSR activity by PT Avia Avian Tbk. is very unique because it carries the theme “Community Empowerment for the Utilization of Economically Valuable Waste,” which has a dual objective: not only to reduce existing waste but also to utilize the waste by managing it to increase the income and living standards of the community around Wadungasih Village.
PT Avia Avian Tbk. had previously conducted extensive consultation and comprehensive mapping before determining a collaborative program tailored to the needs of the Wadungasih Village community. This waste management for economic value is carried out through various activities, including the production of Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) and compost fertilizer using aerobic composters. The fertilizers produced will then be utilized for urban farming activities, which is the use of limited land for agricultural activities to meet the consumption of nutritious food and reduce household expenses.
Not only that, this waste management is also carried out using fermentation methods and utilized as maggot feed, where these maggots will then be used as catfish feed. This is very interesting, considering that this environmental care activity to reduce waste does not end in a single phase but is continuously managed and utilized in a cyclical manner to provide concrete benefits to residents in the long term.
PT Avia Avian Tbk. disbursed a substantial amount of funds for this CSR program. These aid funds were used for the provision of 6000 catfish fingerlings, including feed and pond construction, the creation of urban farming plots along with the provision of fertilizers and vegetable seeds, 30 segregated waste bins, 4 aerobic composters, 1 leaf shredding machine, and 60 kg of maggots including the provision of production bioponds and their enclosures.
In addition to providing material assistance, PT Avia Avian Tbk. also supports training and capacity-building programs for residents so that the community can acquire sufficient knowledge and skills to independently run this program. Residents were divided into several groups to participate in training for urban farming, aerobic composters, Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) production, and maggot and catfish cultivation. From these various trainings, a new waste management group emerged in Wadungasih Village, named the Composter Group. This program also included a comparative study on waste segregation and the Integrated Agricultural Business Center (SATU PADU).
“As the largest paint company in Indonesia, PT Avia Avian Tbk. is very aware that we would never have reached this point without the support and participation of the surrounding community, especially the community of Wadungasih Village, which is the primary operational location of our company.” Said Iwan Sigit, Deputy Director of PT Avia Avian Tbk. in his speech.
All activities of the PT Avia Avian Tbk. CSR program in Wadungasih Village started in May 2023, and to date, a lot of waste has been utilized, and many residents have benefited from the harvests. Residents reported that vegetables from the urban farming plots have been harvested 3 times, catfish cultivation has yielded more than 1 quintal for sale and processed into shredded catfish floss, while maggot cultivation, which began with only one 1 x 1.5 meter enclosure, has now successfully expanded sevenfold and has been harvested multiple times for catfish feed, as well as processed into high-protein products safe for human consumption.
The Head of the Sidoarjo Regency Environmental and Sanitation Agency, Dr. Moh. Bahrul Amig, S.Sos. MM., who also attended the CSR Program Launching event, expressed high appreciation to PT Avia Avian Tbk. for its support and efforts in reducing waste in the Sidoarjo Regency area, especially Wadungasih Village.
“The mothers (of Wadungasih Village) are a valuable asset for people like me (the Government), who are able to manage household waste. The highest level of waste management is the community's ability to process their own waste. Thank you once again to PT Avia Avian Tbk., we from DLHK will continue to support,” stressed the Head of Sidoarjo DLHK in his speech.
